"In order to consistently remain creative you must have a goal for your artwork whatever it may be. The hard part is then trying to achieve that goal." - Mr. M

EXPRESSIONISM

EXPRESSIONISM

-Germany 1905

Expressionism is the tendency of an artist to distort reality for an emotional effect.  Expressionism reflects the artists’ state of mind rather than the reality of the external world.

Expressionism can be defined as the use of distortion and exaggeration for emotional effect.  This art style first surfaced in the literature of the early twentieth century.  Expressionism can be described as a stylistic art that uses intense color, agitated brushstrokes, and disjointed space.

Unlike Impressionism, an Expressionistic artists’ goal is not to reproduce the impression suggested by the surrounding world, but instead to strongly impose the artist's own sensibility to the world's representation.

A self-portrait is a portrait where the artist is also the subject.  Usually it is in the form of a painting, drawing, or similar graphic image; self-portraits occur in other media such as sculpture, photography, cinema, literature, and digital art.  A good portrait tries to let the viewer see into the soul of a person….
SURREALISM

SURREALISM

-What is real? How do you define real? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.  -Morpheus the Matrix

-Have you ever had a dream, that you were so sure was real. What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?  -Morpheus the Matrix

Surrealism is an artistic, cultural and intellectual movement oriented toward the liberation of the mind by emphasizing the critical and imaginative faculties of the "unconscious mind" and the attainment of a dream-like state different from, "more than", and ultimately "truer" than everyday reality: the "sur-real", or "more than real".

MOVIE POSTERS

MOVIE POSTERS

Los Angeles is considered the “Entertainment Capital of the World”.  So it should be no surprise that there are many artists in Hollywood CA. that are not actors.  One of the most popular areas that many artists work in is film advertising and art directing.  These artists are responsible for designing the movie poster we see all over America.

In order to design a movie poster an artist must understand the basics of design which consist of: Audience, layout, Typography, Image, and Color.  They must also be well versed in traditional principal and elements of design.  A movie poster is a representation of that specific feature film.  In order to create a successful movie poster, you must capture the tone and emotion of the movie.
